Fall hair 2010

With this hot humid summer nearing end, clients seem to be changing to their Fall looks a bit early this year. My guess is because we are ready for some cooler air and effortless hair!
This season, you can kiss your flat iron good bye and get out those curling irons. Big, tousled waves and curls are a must. Bed head looks are the way to go this Fall. Try for a rougher version with our Mermaid Sea Salt potion and our magic thickening balm for a fuller ocean texture. Frizzy, flyaway locks are actually the look hitting  the runways for the up coming season.

While Camel is hot for your wardrobe, and purples are great for your face, try these hair color trends. Brunettes are rich and chocolaty with possibly some thick golden hi-lights from the mid shaft down to the ends(think chocolate truffle).
Red heads should lean toward a single process tone all over with vibrant deep mahogany hues. Fall/winter blondes can sill be on the beachy blonde side with possibly a darker root for depth and dimension. Keeping your blonde light and golden is a great look to continue with from summer to autumn.
Whether your fair or tan, glossy black is really in. Try enhancing with a hint of blue.

Keep your look retro, keep it looking two days old! To rid the dirty scalp, try spraying our Pixie Dust Dry shampoo at your roots for a matte, bulky texture.

Bridal looks are leaning towards loose low ponytails with soft waves or big curls. For a retro bride, a curly frizzy teased look is stunning. Undone chignon is a different approach this season, keeping it smooth with a little messy flair. The classic French twist is back looking a bit flyaway for an urban touch.

We are very excited here at My Reis to be using our Lu-Lu Products for all these great styles. "Having the correct products to achieve these looks makes it more fun and creative for us."

So break out those teasing combs and push your straightening creams aside, welcome to Fall...

Summer trends 2010

Hi Everyone! Here are great hair trends for summer 2010. This season, stay away from solid colors. Summer brings beachy, wavy, natural looks. Try a root look. This look can be achieved from your stylist at My Reis Salon. We give you depth at the root and blend to a lighter shade at the ends. To pull this look off, it needs to be professionally done. Do not mistake this look for a grown out color or hi-light. Its seamless and blends effortlessly. If your a more dramatic gal, pop in some brighter hi-lights avoiding heavy or chunky.

Color Palette:

Blonde
Warm, rich blondes are in for the summer. Hi-lights are well blended, tones compliment each other well. Avoid adding cooler and warmer tones together. Stick to the same color palettes but add brighter shades and some deeper shades.

Reds
Warm reds are really in this summer. For a more dramatic statement use Plums. More subtle use copper tones. Again, never mix warm hues with cool ones unless done professionally (and carefully).

Brunette
Carmel, coffee and hazelnut is perfect for this summer. Avoid ashy and matte colors. Bring out the warmth in your locks.

*Please remember that you must compliment your skin tone. If your skin calls for a cooler look, stick with what works best with a subtle touch of warmth that the sun would naturally give you.

2010 Styles

Short
Bobs are huge! Soft bouncy chin length bobs are back! If your more daring, try the "chobb" as Heidi Klum calls her choppy bob with choppy bangs. If your the more subtle type go for a soft sexy bang (fringe), wispy textured layers. For super short looks, try a spiky textured crop with a soft wispy perimeter.

Medium
Wavy shoulder length hair is really in this season. I like to refer to this as a grown out bob look. Undone waves for day time and flat ironed waves for night time. Shorter messy layers will give a rough textured look or for a modest look keep the layers near the longer lengths.

Long
Waves, messy buns, simple messy side braids. Long hair is wispy around face, long layers with a "no maintenance" appearance.
Chopped bang is in also. Try a "beach chic" look and go with your natural waves. Think "full & Messy".

Is airbrush tanning safe?

Hi Peeps! Ive been doing a lot of research on sunless tanners (air brush tans). I tanned in beds for years and many of us still do. I decided to ditch the beds last year when we added an airbrush tanning system for the salon. I love this! You instantly have a beautiful natural looking tan for 2 weeks! My skin feels moisturized and not dry like it would after being under harmful uv rays for 20mins.

A lot of our customers(and my staff) had been mentioning to me that they are sure sunless tanners are probably going to be cancerous in no time. A customer had over heard our conversation and replied "well if red lipstick hasn't caused cancer yet"... Very true. This statement got the marbles rolling for me! So, I researched and found out that in fact the California sunless tanning system we use in our salon is completely safe Read this article by Every Day Health :

So I went on the California Tan website and found out that our tanner contains DHA (a sugar molecule that provides a tan appearance in the upper layer of the skin called the epidermis). DHA is FDA approved! This stimulates a chain of chemical reactions that causes the cells in the upper epidermis to turn brown. There is a cool video on their website that explains the process:

I am very estacic that I chose a great tanning system. The first article states to be careful of other tanning lotions containing the ingredient "canthaxanthin"!
"Now lets all go get our TAN on" The "SAFE" natural way! I hope this article helped answer your concerns

My Reis product line

While in the process of opening the salon, I knew I needed a hair product line like no other. Ive tried hundreds of products over the years and they were all just...ok. One of my clients told me about this great line called Davines. I had never heard of it but wanted to try it immediately! I went online and Googled it asap. Come to find out, there was a distributor a few towns over that had it. So as crazy about hair products that I am, I drove there just to sample what my great customer had told me was an amazing line of products. When I got there a gentleman walked by me and said "Davines, great product"! I ended up talking with this man for about 20 minutes about the product line. He worked there and knew just about everything about the company's history and why it was such a great product. Knowing I was going into business for myself I kept his card.
A few months went by... I was getting closer to oping my doors and I decided to give him a call. He wasn't there anymore, noone there would tell me where he went. I called the company and they told me that the company had parted ways with the distibutor.. Hmmmm so now where can I get these products that I tried, and LOVED myself.
It was crunch time, I needed a product to fill my shelves asap for my grand opening. What am I going to do! this was crazy, I had never wanted a product so badly! Since my color line was Goldwell, I decided to open my salon with the Goldwell products. There is absolutely nothing wrong with those products except for the fact that they were saturated in the Exeter/Stratham area. I need a product that made us stand out, a product that no one had in the area so we could educated our customers on the proper use of them. And last but not least, a product that you couldn't pick up at CVS while grabbing a box of q tips.
A girlfriend of mine owns a salon in Groveland MA. One day a man stopped by and was talking to her about this wonderful product called...."Davines". She said, "my girlfriend is looking for you!!" Long story short, I got my Davines, Finally! This great man, now works directly for the Davines company. We are currently exclusive to the product line. The community has given us great feedback on it as well. Man, if everyone knew what I went threw to get it in my salon, ha!
The thing I like the most about it is the conditioners. Have you ever realized that when you use a conditioner it detangles, but feels like its just sitting on your hair for a few minutes, then goes down the drain? The Davines conditioners feel like they are saturating into your locks, almost like your hair is drinking it. It feel like when you put lotion on your skin, and that to me is how a conditioner is suppose to feel. The only other product line that made my hair feel so moisturized in that sense was the Bumble and Bumble treatment and Kerastase treatment, those particular products set you back about $100 for just a couple, eeek! Its definitely scary buying bubbles for $50. Davines has a terrific price point around $20 for the shampoo, and works phenomenally. Come by and pick some up, you'll love it!
At the moment we are currently working on our own hair product line. This line is going to be a great alternative that compliments our Davines just right. I will keep you updated on our experiences creating it, and until it is just right, we wont be launching it into our salon. Stay tuned peeps!

My hair looks so good (when I leave the salon)

Customers love when they come and get their hair done. Its a great treat in this stressful economy. A simple shampooing can take all our stress away. In our salon, we love to give each other shampoos! I will come in on my day off just to get one! A lot of people don't realize this but you can go to a salon for just that! How great would it be to come in after a long hard working day, relax at our sink, have a glass of wine and get a nice long head massage? Its amazing!
We as stylist get little services done all the time to make our hair as healthy and shiny as possible. We just don't talk about it! My hair is thick and long, I usually get dry hair cuts every 8weeks, every 3-4 weeks color gloss my hair with a conditioning clear shine toner,  get deep conditioning treatments monthly and use the best shampoos and conditioners we have.
Now If I said that to each and every customer that walked into the salon I would sound a little sales person-ish. That is not the environment I imagined.

Hair Stylist are creative in what we do. We are typically very visual people and love our jobs! We don't however want to ever try to push products. Hair Stylists love their customers and grow relationships with them and never want to make them feel uncomfortable. Our job is to make them relax and not think about their hectic lives, money, bills... you name it! So I find that most of the time, our customers are missing a huge part of the service that they are paying for. They come to you because they want to know what shampoo would be best for their hair and scalp. They come because they see a celebrity and want to know why their hair is so shiny and beautiful. They want to know why everyone in a salon looks so good! Its because we use our products, and groom our hair on a regular basis. "Ever notice that when you leave the salon your hair looks and feels like your the celebrity?" Its not just the blow out you had, its the products that were used while giving you the blow out. We know this, but somehow just don't talk about it! We just assume you know what the mousse was that we just pumped into our hand while talking about what we did last weekend. I'm sorry, but your paying for a service to hear about your stylist, right? Sounds pretty odd, because it is. You should know everything that is going into your hair from the shampoo, to the kind of brush, to finishing spray (we do)!

So next time your at the salon, make sure you know all these things. If you don't, we are not doing our jobs!

Welcome To Our Blog!

Welcome! I wanted to create this blog to give advice to customers, and feedback from our community. This is a great way to talk about the things we learn as stylists that we just cannot tell to each and every customer ( we try).
Sometimes, we as stylist get so wrapped up in our careers that we forget that not everyone knows how to blow dry their hair, or even what shampoo to use.
I recently had a beautiful baby girl named Carmella. I had a wonderful overall experience being pregnant with her. The only thing I must say is that the doctors do not tell you anything!! You have no idea what to expect for your next appointment, I used google when I had a simple question, and i felt like I should just "know" what the nurses and dr's are talking about and would feel absolutely stupid if I needed to ask a question.
This experience was truly life changing for me, and not just because my life would be changing forever! I wondered how many of our customers walk into my salon daily and feel the same way about getting their hair done as I did with my pregnancy experience and all those doctors appointments. Now I do understand that the two are completely on different levels (are they?).
Customers service is no longer existing. Walking into the doctors office is the most awkward and uncomfortable feeling, ever! I leave my appointments thinking to myself, do our customers feel this way? I truly try to make that first step in our door as comfortable as possible.
Each experience I endure has made me aware of the small things that are extremely important in running a successful business. Are our customers leaving my salon without the proper shampoo and conditioner? Do the not know how to style their hair? Are they googling scalp conditions?
This blog is our way to talk about our knowledge, experiences, and questions our clients may have. isn't this easier than remembering to ask your stylist? check out our frequently updated blog! Get the latest tips, and hair styles from our staff! We look forward to blogging with you   -Nicole Reis
